What Is Acupuncture All About?

Acupuncture is a part of the Ancient practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is a system of healthcare that has evolved over thousands of years to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases. Due to its effectiveness, acupuncture became popular outside Asia and is now practiced in many western countries.

TCM indicates that the body’s vital energy, called Qi (pronounced chee), flows along specific channels or meridians in the body. If Qi is in balance a person has spiritual, emotional, and physical health. But when Qi in not in balance, disease may occur. Qi can be blocked, causing unbalance between the yin and yang. This refers to two opposite but connected principles in Chinese philosophy. TCM uses many approaches to create harmony between yin and yang and restore correct flow of energy through the meridians. One of these approaches is acupuncture. Acupuncturists believe the human body has more than 2,000 acupuncture points. They are linked through the various meridians. The use of acupuncture on certain points within the meridians is believed to improve the flow of blocked or stagnant Qi. Acupuncture can unblock these meridians. This restores movement of Qi and improves health.

Other medical conditions we treat at our clinic include allergies, skin problems, musculoskeletal issues, and circulatory, urinary, respiratory, eye, anxiety, and hearing disorders.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

According to TCM, you’re in good health when the life force referred to as “Qi” is in a state of balance. Qi is made up of the two interdependent extremes known as Yin and Yang. Disruption of these forces causes an imbalance and leads to illnesses like stress and anxiety, headaches, pain, and digestive disorders.

It is believed that Qi flows along 14 major pathways/channels in your body known as meridians. The blockage or depletion of Qi is what makes you ill.

The actual practice of acupuncture includes placing thin needles into the skin on certain points of a meridian which improves energy flow in those areas. These are then activated by the provider’s hands or through electrical stimulation. Studies have shown that acupuncture works well for many conditions. This is how acupuncture can be utilized for the treatment of various medical conditions.

I have visited Amy several times during the last two weeks to help reduce and manage pain with a chronic lower back injury. My first call to Amy was early on a Saturday morning and I was surprised to hear from her and she offered to meet me within the same hour. After my first visit I obtained significant pain reduction and overall improved well being. I have had several more visits where she has helped maintain and provide on-going pain management. This has resulted in improved mobility and better sleep management due to less pain. I can say she has helped me with pain management and would not hesitate to recommend her.

After a few session of acupuncture, taking herbs daily and change to my diet. The pain and rashes went away. I feel so much better. Thank!

Dr. Amy Lao has helped me with a few issues. One of my favourite things is that she is available pretty much any time, on weekends and at night. She will make the extra effort to be there when you need her, including last minute "I'm in pain can you see me now" requests.
